Products wireless networks are so pervasive and inexpensive that anyone can set up a wireless LAN very fast, in fact, many service providers now provide wireless routers in their broadband band. The widespread use of wireless networks is the ability of a network intruders your home or office network. Most of the local wireless network is incredibly simple and, in the case of equipment by service providers to broadband, it is often delivered preconfigured. However, it is necessary for the security of your wireless LAN router, here are some things you can do to protect your wireless network. Set the admin interface. Wireless routers usually have an administrator password to be entered before the configuration can be changed. Most devices with a standard pre administrator password and some have no password at all. You should always ensure that an administrative password is set or if the device has a default password. If the device without a password or the password has a default value, you run the risk of the device without your knowledge or by someone who was able to connect to your network or malware that you have accidentally downloaded.

WPA encryption instead of WEP. 802.11 is WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption has weaknesses, which is relatively easy to break the encryption and access to the wireless network. Better encryption standard WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), which is much better and is easier to use. WPA support is in almost all modern wireless hardware and operating systems. WPA2 is a newer version of the standard even stronger encryption.

It is possible that some devices that do not support WPA (common devices such as media players, PDAs, etc.). In this situation, the temptation to disable encryption, but it will be really wide open to attack. WEP, for all its faults, is better than nothing and should be used when you devices that do not support WPA. If you are using WEP make sure you do not use easy to guess the encryption key. You must also change the WEP encryption key at least once a week.

No broadcast SSID. Most wireless access points and wireless routers to the streaming of wireless network name, it is also known as the Service Set Identifier or SSID. The goal is simple to configure wireless networks such as wireless devices can identify available wireless networks. Also promotes the presence of your wireless network is a wireless systems in the range. Running SSID broadcast will make your wireless network invisible to your neighbors and the occasional intruder, but it will always be visible to anyone with a wireless network sniffer.

Use MAC filtering. The MAC address is a hardware address associated with a network card and, unlike the IP address that is unique adapter. By using the MAC filtering on your wireless access point or router allows devices that are allowed to connect. MAC addresses can be spoofed by someone with sufficient knowledge so that not an absolute guarantee of safety, but the striker remains an obstacle to jump.

Disable remote administration. Many wireless LAN routers can be managed remotely via the Internet. You should only use this if you are capable of specific IP addresses or a limited number of IP addresses that are able to manage the router. If you can not do everything, everywhere access to your router. Unless you specifically need this functionality, it is best to disable it, most wireless LAN routers, this feature by default, but it is always interesting.

Reduce the power of the wireless LAN. This function does not exist at all routers and access points wireless LAN, but some allow you to power the transmitter, so that the range of the signal. It is generally impossible to refine the signal to a point where it does not leak outside your company, but you can limit how far the signal, the opportunities for people outside your company to access your network wireless.
