The most common question I get this writing is: “Why is it taking so long to implement electronic health records? Our first 18-mo-project fell in about three years instead. Although this seems a little cautious to some colleagues, people in IT and project management industry has praised our approach to the situation. It is known that technical implementations of the Internet system (such as EMR) not 50 percent of the time. A solid plan is to replace, taking into account unforeseen circumstances that may alter the timetable. For example, our trip were two new employees, two hurricanes and a departure of an employee.

Your electronic health records vendor must refer to someone to guide you in execution. However, that person or someone with experience EMR or someone who knows the system itself, but not so much on the deployment of a medical office. I strongly recommend hiring the services of a certified PM (Project Manager). One important thing to do is one hours to your project in a dynamic process that allows a chess and delays. The standard calendar can not do much for such monitoring.

We first established a project manager for the site plan of our new office. Our employees can use what they learned the process, which includes how the mapping software mind. We used these techniques for all major projects in our practice since then, including the implementation of electronic medical record (EMR).

For meetings and other small projects, I recommend Getting Things Done by David Allen.

The main advantage of using a work breakdown structure is that all the problems that pop-up does not totally ruin your goal of successful implementation of the SPD system. Of course, in practice a little more flexibility in programming. A delay drive would certainly be taken under the plan for the deployment of EMR-out. However, with a structure appropriate plan for your deployment plan on the punches instead of simply tilting.

When we finally got aa place where the staff was trained, we placed the deadline hard to live. There was the same date one Saturday that two days before launch, the two dates are required to attend.

Although in theory we have pushed the launch date back, these data have helped to keep us working and risks exposed face. Now we are about 5 months into our deployment. The stress began to dissolve a little, and we refine our models and prepare for the next wave of patients to introduce electronic health records.
